I have a older Stinger 75 and an a woman to boot, brand new at this but handy with tools when the need arises. My steering is frozen solid, I have been trying to follow the terminology in the older posts with little success. I guess what I need to know to start is where to disconnect the steering cable from the motor at... I see a connection on the lower left of the motor, then I understand I should soak that in vinegar and penetrating oil such a wd40, if that doesn't work new cables? Not sure what I should order.. help.

Re: steering frozen solid

Boyzgranny,
I just went through this with my 77 VIP. The first thing you should do is disconnect the motor from the cable end, if your standing out of boat behind the motor it will be on the left side. Remove the nut and pull the motor steering shaft out of the end of the cable. Once disconnected try to turn the motor by hand, if you can't your problem is in there and is above my knowledge level. If the motor turns easily, disconnect the cable from the back side of the helm(steering wheel) then try to turn the wheel itself if it turns easily then it is the cable that is bad and will need to be replaced, if not then the helm is the problem. Hope this helps you out. ;) Good luck, oh and FYI it is usally the cable or the tilt tube that the cable goes through. If you replace the cable make sure to super clean the tube, it will pay off in the long run.

Wetwolf

Moving to I/O's.

Boyzgranny, your problem can be best assisted in the I/O section of the forum.

Uh Mod2, he said Stinger, not stringer. Stinger as in 3 cylinder outboard built by OMC in the 70's.
