I have a 1979 85hp evinrude on a 1981 16' fish/ski boat. When going straight the motor is turned. WHen making a turn the motor is perfectly straight instead of the other way around. Anyway to fix this?

Re: steering help

First, check the motor mount bolts for tightness, also measure the motor to be sure it's centered and vertical. Measure from the corners of the transom to the tip of the skeg - should be identical provided the motor's facing dead ahead.

There's a torque tab attached to the bottom side of the antiventilation plate, hanging there above the propeller. First score a mark across the edge so you can reset it if you have to, then loosen the bolt and rotate the back of it in the direction of the turn. e.g., boat pulls to starboard, rotate the back of the tab to the right. A little at a time. What that does is, nudge the back of the motor to port (as in the example), pressuring the boat to port.

Re: steering help

please clairify. are you saying when the steering wheel is straight (centered) the motor is turned, and when you turn the wheel the motor is straight? what happens when you turn the other way? what type steering system do you have. rotary or rack?

this is rotary

this is rack

Re: steering help

Just to update. adjusted the trim tab and now the motor is lined up perfect when going straight.
