Hey everyone!
We've been looking around for our first boat and came across a 1989 Bayliner 2958. It needs some minor cosmetic work but the main issue is the steering is frozen. When we were at the dock checking it out the present owner showed us that he was able to shift the outdrives (OMC Cobra I believe) into forward and reverse, but when he turned the wheel the belt would begin slipping at the power steering pump and the outdrives would not turn.
I know there are probably several different possibilities, but what is this most commonly associated with? The drives themselves, or are there other hydraulics, cables, etc. that may be an issue? Any idea of the cost to repair from the simplest to worst case? I really like the boat but don't want to take on a huge costly project.
The boat is powered by twin 305's. From my research I'm pretty sure (but not positive) the outdrives are OMC Cobra.
Thanks!
