Steering issue again

I've read every thing I can about hard steering and believe I pretty much understand where the problems can be found. I'm just trying to figure out which item to start with. I just got a 1989 Chaperral 198 XL. It has a 5.0 Mercruiser and Alpha 1 Outdrive. The only question I have about this is in relation to the stiff steering. the power steering fluid is full and I hear squeaks at the helm when turning the wheel. Would this indicate that it's probably the cable that needs to be replaced?

Disconnect the cable at the back and you can quickly tell if it is the problem.

most times the cable is tight in the guide tube at the transom side from lack of maintance.

Ayuh,..... Agreed,.... Don't buy a cable, til ya got yer's outa the aluminum tube at the transom,....

They get hung up in there, from a lack of grease,...
