I am trying to remove the steering cable off the intermediate housing so I can remove the engine from the boat to fix the transom over the winter. Do I need to remove the entire assembly that attaches to the housing?

Re: steering on 82 OMC

I assume that you have Tru-course steering, a double way cable housing with a spool/drum at each end. I also assume you have the outdrive off?

Have someone turn the wheel slowly. I believe on the left side edge of the drum, there is an apperature, position it so you can get a screwdriver on the head inside and unscrew it.
Pull the steering gear w/ shaft out from the outside of the intermediate housing. Pay careful note to all washers and bushings.

This is also a good time to lubricate the cables. Prop the rear drum, as high up in the air as you can. Take a spraycan of BreakFree with nozzle and spray down each cable way as someone slowly turns the wheel. Repeat several times in each direction, keep the drum as high up as you can. Take note of the steering effort before you start. I did this to mine and reduced the steering effort considerably.

That's great info - thanks. Pretty sure it is the Tru-course steering and yes, outdrive is off.
Cheers!

KMcD... The screw hole is hidden behind a plastic sheild. Thought I'd throw that in.... my first time was a real bear until I found the screw hole.
