I've recently purchased a 1987 27'sea ray and
the steering has about 3" play. This causes me to
oversteer and overcorrect constantly at slow or idle speeds.
Since I am very new at This size boat, My question is Is this normal or does this indicate a needed adjustment or repair

Re: Steering play excessive

If you have play in the linkage, It's just a Shake, Pull,+ Wiggle to find Where it's Loose....

BUT, a boat the size of yours, with a deep-vee hull....
They tend to Wander a Little...
If you just Relax,+ Let it Go....
It'll drift right,+ left 10 or 15*, But keep coming back....
A Tender Touch on the wheel is Only nessesary once + awhile....

27' boats will wander as bondo has written but I would not be satisfied with 3" of slop in the helm.
