I have a 1987 Well-Craft 230 with twin OB 140 OMC motors and Hydraulic steering. I recently developed a problem as follows: When not in the water or at very low speeds in the water the steering is fine, but once I achieve about 15/20 MPH the steering becomes very hard. The motors are towed out a little, is this the problem? If I allign the motors how should they be configured?

Re: Steering pproblem

Do you mean physically hard to turn the wheel or just poor handling? At lower speeds I would keep the drives trimmed all the way down.

Bob

dcooper,

The engines should be pointing exactly the same direction. If they are "toe out" as you say, they are fighting each other.

This could add to excess seering effort.

the wheel is very hard to turn, there is no play, soft spots, or springy feel to the wheel just a lot of resistence to a turn

Re: Steering pproblem

It's fixed; I loosened the bleeder screw on the top of the hydro manifold and manualy moved the engines so a measurment taken from the front of the engine and one taken at the back were the same.
