Steering. Probably a really silly question

Evening folks. I've got a fletcher 14ft arrowflyte that I will be putting my 1971 35hp chrysler onto. It originally had pully steering but I've just got of eBay a teleflex safe-t helm an cable.
Now probably a silly question but do I just attach the connection to the centre if the engine? Or will I need an adapter of any kind??

As you can tell I'm a proper newbie.

Early Chrysler engines did not have a steering tube attached to the transom clamps. A steering tube is a piece of pipe about 1 inch in diameter and threaded on both ends.

If your 35 does not, then you need a transom mounted steering tube and a universal at the engine. If it does have a steering tube mounted on the transom clamps, the cable passes through the steering tube and a stainless bar returns from the end of the cable to the nose of the engine.

Off the top of my head I can't remember. I have googled similar engines and have an idea what I am looking for now.
Time to google the bar needed now. Thanks for the heads up :) I'd have been stood there just looking at it and swearing tomorrow. Lol

What is the bar that connects the steering arm to the outboard called?

Contact Teleflex and explain the problem you have.
They make adapter kits and everything you'll need to hook up steering.

Good Luck! Please post your results. I challenged this issue in 1985 with my 1970 35 hp Chrysler on a 15? RayCraft Boat. After seeing my challenge, cost and using the boat 5-8 short fishing trips 3 summer months only, I backed off. I still have the old spooled sys and will live with it.

It was a mount issue that turned me and probably a budget issue since this was a trial to see if I would stay with boating that was new to me. I promised to retire from boat fishing 2-3 years ago but we are still catching fish with this ?Starter Boat? w/o one major problem. The motor has been a Dream compared to other 2-cycles and auto issues over the years.

The fletcher hull I bought had the steering taken out. The old pulleys were still there though. I one a brand new teleflext safe-t helm bezel and wheel on eBay for a rediculous price. It does seem a tad huge though. But sod it. Lol. The motor is ideal now I have found a parts store in the uk. As my nephew has started an apprentiship with Sunseeker he can start on it as it is nice and basic. But these little problems that seem stupid to most people keep popping up. Like the steering and where to buy the rubber trim that goes around the boat. Mines shrunk buy a foot since I've had it off. Going to try a hot water bath on it.

Sorry lost it on a rant then. Lol.

I will certainly post pics up next month when I get paid and can go shopping again. :)

The rubber rub rail insert. The hot water should do the trick.
After it's put back in,use a screw to anchor it in place on each end.
