I have a 72 Chysler Bassrunner 16' and the steering is very stiff under power, took the cable loose at the motor (74 Johnson 70hp)and you can turn the wheel with one finger, the motor also turns freely, hook it back up and turns pretty easy put it back in the water and got up on plane 3/4 to wot and it is stiff as heck, the cable is to long and has a loop in it but not a tight one. Any ideas on this???????????

It sounds like one of two things and possibly a combination of both.Too long a cable will cause binding if the turns are too sharp.

Also, may want to completely remove the cable end from the tilt tube and insure it's not all crudded up.If it is,clean the rod and bore of the tube well and relube both and reassemble.Very common problem with tight steering.

I took the cable out of the tilt tube and it was pretty clean just grease in there, put it back together and no change, it looks like the cable is about 3' to long but is in a large loop and seems not to make any difference when unhooked and streched out or with the loop in it, the cable is about 1 1/2 years old according to the guy i bought the boat from, they should last longer than that shouldn't they. The guy is a friend of mine and said it didn't do that when he had it, but he didn't tell me he put new carpet over all this rotted wood either.LOL :D
