How can you tell if the power steering pump is working? Sterring is hard. Motor moves freely by hand when disconnected. Checked feed and return lines, also bypassed oil cooler. Not sure what to do next.Thank you

Re: steering pump

Your pump may not be the problem, your problem could be at the helm or the steering cable its self, but if run it with the cooler bypassed for to long, you will have a bad pump, have you disconnected the cable at the actuator (thats the tiller assembly) mounted on the inner transom bracket and tried rotating the steering wheel, if nice and free then cable and rack are good, if stiff more than likly its the cable. If a power steering pump goes bad most the time it will be noisy with alot of sqealing and whining. The steering actuator itself could also be the culprit but I'm not 100% sure how to check that, hopefully somebody has that info.
