Steering question.

I just purchased a 1979 Wellcraft Nova 250 XL with a Volvo Penta drive V8. The steering is a bit tight at all speeds. I was wondering if this is how how it was when new. If not how can restore it to it's original steering "ease of use"? Also, what's the maintenance on the steering system?

Thanks.

Re: Steering question.

Ayuh,... Disconnect the cable at the drive, then decide if the resistence is from the drive or the cable...
If the drive,... Grease it...
If the cable,... Replace it....

If the drive,... Grease it...

Actually, grease probably won't work. If it's the drive, cry first. Then we can discuss what it will take to fix it.

Re: Steering question.

I finally got around to disconnecting the steering cable. The steering wheel turned a bit easier. What's the next step?

Thanks.

Re: Steering question.

I couldn't test it today. The boat is kept in the water but there are some areas where I can anchor and stand in the water and check it. What if it's still tight?

Thanks.

Re: Steering question.

I was able to test the stiffness of the outdrive today (steering cable disconnected) it was tight/stiff. With 1 being loose and 5 very stiff it was about a 4. Any and all thoughts are welcome.

Thanks.

Re: Steering question.

I'll leave the "cry worthy" answer to the experts, but have you greased all of the appropriate points already to see if that would help? Seems like a good idea to eliminate the least expensive probable causes first, right?
