Steering Question

My 1987 Renken 1750 Limited has a steering issue. Trying to go straight at idle is difficult because the outdrive drifts from side to side. Everything is tight between the outside and inside the boat. When I move the outdrive, play can be observed in the steering cable itself - about a half inch or so - same at the wheel - I can move the wheel about 1 to 2" before it actually turns and this is causing the drifting outdrive. Is there an adjustment in the cable? I have no idea if this is the orignal cable or not? Under the dash, it is a gear attached to the steering wheel, which is in a green metal track - I guess it's a rack type system? What would I call it to purchase a replacement if needed.

Thanks for the helps.

Re: Steering Question

If that drive was welded solid to the transom, it would still wander around. It's just something they all do. Practice, and don't oversteer, you'll get the hang of it. Steering is not tight like your car.

Ayuh,.... I agree,.... If yer havin' issues, at Above idle/ trollin' speeds,.... Ya it might be a problem....

But boats in water, unlike cars on asphalt, wander all by themselves....

Less operator input usually works much Better than workin' too hard at it....
Unless yer near a dock or something,...
It'll wander 1 way, then the other, depending on wind, 'n currents.... it Ain't asphalt....

Re: Steering Question

That's a good point. I'll get to work - good excuse to go out - "but hun, I need to practice!"
