I have a 1986 Mercury boat with an older steering system(boat is roughly 1978). The steering cable goes through the side of the boat then under the back seats and near but seperate hole from the gas and electric cable hole. The problem is the bracket that holds that steering cable is old and the fiberglass its attached too is even worse, does any company make any of those brackets with a backing plate so the screw bolts won't come out of the fiberglass, is so can you guys point me in the right direction? What is the proper name for this bracket that holds the steering cable?

Thanks,

Claude

Re: Steering question?

OK I figured out what this is called. The one that is currently on there is called a splashwell Mounting bracket. Can anyone suggest any other steering cable support bracket I could use on my boat. If I use another splaswell mounting bracket it doesn't have a support bracket behind and I am afriad I will just pull the bracket out of the fiberglass.

Thanks,

Claude
