I'm trying to clean up some issues the boat has had for a while. This is a 1995 Four Winns Freedom 170 with 4.3GL OMC Cobra and a Volvo SX outdrive.
There are literally dozens of threads on this issue on the boards. However, I haven't seen any of the ones with my problem, resolved.
The issue is that my steering wheel has play in it. To clarify, the outdrive does not have any play in it. This is independent of whether the boat is on, off, moving fast, moving slow. It is not just the wandering that v-hull boats have. It is play in the steering cable. The boat has power steering. The connection between the steering wheel and the pulley that is under the steering wheel does not have any play, and the cables move instantly at the helm. The problem must be in the transom of the boat.
Is there typically an adjustment for cable slop on these boats? Or is it something else? The steering works fine, there just happens to be about 30 degrees or so of play in the wheel before the power steering is activated.
Thanks in advance...
