Re: steering stuck

i just went thru the same thing. take the bolt off where the steering arm connects to the motor. grease the fitting near the steering shaft, "wiggle" the shaft up and down while someone trys to turn the wheel. just work it back and forth don't force it to mucbh. it should release after a little work.

Re: steering stuck

see if you can get some lube to work inside the cable. during winter you should move the steering once a month to avoid seisure

Re: steering stuck

The steering usually gets stuck where the stainless rod goes into the aluminum tube right at the sterndrive. The usual cure is to disconnect the steering rod from the sterndrive steering arm, and from the joint on the inner transom shield so you can pull the cable out into the fresh air. Now put a propane torch onto it to melt the grease. Now the steering rod should move and you can spray penetrating oil onto it, exercise it and wipe off the dirt and corrosion. After it is clean lube it up well. Mercruiser makes Special Lube 101 just for this purpose.

Re: steering stuck

I also have the same problem... I was boating yesterday and my steering was very tight i tried to turn and it was locked... I turned the steering wheel harder and then the steering wheel turned without any action from the motor... Eventually I was towed in by another fisher... I thought that I may have snapped the steering cable, but when I removed the bracket that connects to the steering rod, the steering wheel was moving the rod... I guess there may be something dissconnected between the two pieces... if anyone has a picture of how to remove rod, it would be very helpful... thanks in advance!!!
