I have a 1970 40hp Evinrude and need to replace the old steering system, but not sure what to replace it with. I measured the distance and I need about a 14 foot system. Please help.

Re: Steering System

There's a few ways of doing it. Basically starting with a rotary or rack steering system from Teleflex or Uflex. Here's a post that give you the idea of how that works:
http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=030720#000002

So basically it hangs onto the hull (either splashwell or transom mount), and the ram at the end of the steering cable is attached to the outboard's "handle" by a clevis or tie rod.

All those bits get kind of pricey, and some people don't like the setup on general principals. An interesting alternative is the setup from T&R Marine (Google will find them). Have a look at their clamp mount kits, specifically the one that fits under the engine clamps. That works similar to how a modern outboard steering system works with the ram running through the tilt tube.

There's some details here:
http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=032739#000006

I hope that helps!
