I will be replacing the rotary steering system on my 88spl. I hope i may not have to dismount the engine. Does the cable rod that goes through the tilt tube actually hold the engine to the bracket? Can i just try to remove it without using a cherrypicker to support the engine? Thanks in advance.

Re: Steering system

if you have room in the splashwell, you do not have to remove the engine. release the nut on the cable and slide the cable out of the engine.. if stuck, tap the rod out, careful not to mushroom the end of cable. if you have to remove the motor cherry picker works well. use a chain. and raise the bow as high as possible, so the transom is low. pictures to follow. 1st picture is one i had to drive out yesterday, 2nd is my 88spl.
