Steering system

I just took the steering system out of my old console and luckily it still works great. Even though it was a pain in the butt to take out. I was wondering if anyone knew the specific name for the white tube that comes out of "what i think is called helm." Also what's the purpose of it?

Pretty sure it's called a support tube. When you turn the wheel, the cable moves through the mechanism and out. This tube protects and stores the cable after it exits.
