hi all
not sure if this was the right place to post

i have a 90 hp force, on a seafarer, the steering is extremely
tight to turn. we disconnected the steering linkage from the motor
and the steering from the wheel is very easy.

the motor, however, is very tight on the pivot to turn left/right.
and we noticed the grease is very thick and old

has anyone had this problem?
or does anyone know how to remove the motor from the steering
pivots to re-grease it?

thankyou
John

What year? You have grease fittings on the pivot pins and the tilt bar.
Profile? Location? Salt/fresh?The job of removing the motor is one you don't want to do.
The mid section grease fittings can actually blow themselfs out if the grease is too old and stiff.
You need to try a grease gun with marine quality grease.
A couple of pumps and you should see grease comming out the bottom or top.
If the grease won't go in easily then your gonna need heat.
A small propane torch will help.
Severe cases will need drilling and a oxy/act cutting torch.

Thanks for your reply. I have attached some photo's
It is I think a 1990 model, today I removed the plate behind the bottom shaft and as soon as I released the preasure of the 4 bolts the motor turned very easily, so I cleaned the shaft, pumped new grease through until all the old grease was removed, cleaned and greased the plate that is half cuped to fit around the shaft and put it back on, but as soon as I re-tighten the 4 bolts the motor cannot turn again, it seems like the plate does not have enough clearance for the shaft to turn???? as soon as I loosen of the bolts a little the motor turns?? Buggered If I know how it ever could work freely??

Lookls like the shft has been scored.
Try sanding the inside of the cover a bit.
Find the tourqe values for the cover. You might be over tightening?

Your motor looks to be newer than a 90

My CRS brain seems to remember a plastic sleeve that has to be delt with. Reamed and sanded. Oh yea!The pivoting occurs up higher. That part pictured is supposed to hold firmly.

Went searching for the posts where Frank A. explained the loosening process to me but the history has disappeared. Sorry.
