Steering transom mounting bracket

I transfered my 68 55hp Evinrude from an old Bonita to a Cobia. My problem is that the transom mounting bracket for the steering cable is about 6" long, the sleeve is one with ridges on outside and a ball for pivot. No matter how I route the cable the Cobia just doesn't seem built for this sort of combination. What I need is something with a shorter bracket. How many different types of these brackets and tubes are there?<br />Also I was wondering, is there a year of Evinrude/Johnson that is compatible in a way that I can swap out the transom mount for the one with the built in tube? Not sure what year they started that.
