Steering troubles

My 1994 21' Hewescraft SeaRunner with 130 Honda has just stripped out the Teleflex NFB Safe T II rotary steering for the second time. This steering kit was just installed 15 engine hours ago to replace the original teleflex cable that stripped out last November.

I have a feeling that it might have to do with my repowering from the Mariner 115 to the Honda 130 that I did 2 years ago. My Honda swivels on the transom with ease, I can easily move it with one finger throughout the range, at idle or full speed it steers effortlessly, HOWEVER, it is stiff to steer when making turns coming off of plane or at max wake speed, and since my boys have grown a bit and now would rather tube and wakeboard than fish, this proposes a lot of sharp, slow speed turns coming off of plane to pick up fallen riders or just making big wakes for fun. We also do a 10 day bay crabbing trip in the fall each year which equates to 25 hours of low speed, off plane circling of crab trap buoys. I'm sure this is what's causing my rotary helm to strip.

My questions are: Do I replace my steering with the same system hoping it was a fluke thing, or do I need to go to rack/pinion or hydraulic? If my motor steers really nice at idle or on plane, what and how do I look for as far as binding at off plane speeds. I'd appreciate any thoughts on the subject.

Thanks,
Tim

Re: Steering troubles

sounds like you need to go hydrolic.

Re: Steering troubles

Ok, hydraulic equals $700+ for my boat, what about rack and pinion? Any pros/cons to either system, besides you get what you pay for?

Thanks,
Tim
