1999 bayliner 1850 has steering troubles

i can turn the wheel all the way around and everything. thats not the problem. the problem is that it takes all my force to turn it its very stiff

is this something to do with the steering cable.

can it be fixed or does it need to be replaced

Almost certianly a steering cable problem, but the Doctur is right, what is it hooked to? What is your motor and drive system?, year?

Re: steering troubles

Since the 1850 is an IO boat (some of the usless info I have stuck in my head), my guess it the steering cable is corroded into the aluminum tube it goes through where it attaches to the transom shield.
Disconnect the cable from the drive and see if it moves easier. If not, disconnect the big cable nut on the shift cable and turn the steering wheel. if the wheel turns easy, the cable is frozen in the aluminum tube.
Remove the cable completely and clean the tube.
Undoubtedly a salt water boat if that is the problem.

It's a Gen II outdrive. That started in 91 through the present day Alpha drives.

See Don, I'm a fresh water guy and automatically started thinking bad cable, rack, or rotory box up at the helm.
What you suggested makes perfect scense for salty applications.
Never too old to learn.

You wouldn't believe how much I have learned here. I just happen to get a chance to test some of the things I hear about. Then I know for myself.
Hopefully, I never give bad information, but it does happen more times than I care to thing about ............. trust me   and it doesn't feel very good either.
