I have on old cable and pulley steering system on my 1966 Chrysler. I replaced all the cables and springs, but the pulleys seem fine... When running WOT it seems fine, but when maneurvering at slow speed, after some time, the cables spin around each other at the rear engine pulley's... the pulley on the engine is connected via a snap ring and for whatever reason this keeps happening... I realease the cable clamps and untwist the cable and continue on, but it happens everytime I am on the water...? Should the pulley's be lubed with grease..? It's like the cable is spinning around until it binds... any help would be great...

Re: Steering troubles

Those systems are a pain. I think it happens because of the cable having its own natural curve to it from being stored rolled up. Mine eventually stopped doing it, but it also wasn't as bad as yours, it would usually rotate the pulley just one turn, but everything still worked. Unsure of a solution, other than just spend about $150 and converting to a rack and pinion setup.

Where do you get this type of system... and if I buy a new motor will it be set up for rack and pinion?? When I do a complete tear down this winter, I would like to consider the upgrade to the steering while painting... The old motor will have to stay for a while... rack and pinion may be better installed after painting.

Perfect, exactly what I am looking for... however, how do I know if it will fit my boat and motor??? the Command 200 complete steering package indicates a Five inch minimum cable bend radius ... what does this mean? I hate to buy things mail order unless I know it is ecatly what I want?

thanks

Re: Steering troubles

I hope my thinking is correct here - draw a circle with a diameter of 10 inches. This circle will have a radius of 5 inches (middle of circle to outside of circle). The actual circle you draw will be how tightly you can bend the cable, shouldn't bend any smaller than the curve of the circle.
