I just bought a new teleflex steering system and I cant get the wheel off of the post on my old one. It is a teleflex system as well. I removed the locking nut from the wheel center and the wheel wont come off. I cant see where there is anything else to loosen/remove or unclip. It is a tilt steering wheel by the way if that helps. Its driving me nutts hopefully someone will have the answer.

Re: Steering wheel removal

Welcome to iboats.

Have a seat. Spin the nut on flush with the end of the shaft. Put your knees behind the wheel and use your feet and ankles against the floor to apply pulling force to the wheel. Grab the top of the wheel with one hand and also apply the same force. You want the pressure points to be at rougly 12:00, 4:00, and 8:00 on the wheel. Now rap the nut with a hammer and it should pop.

WilyB's got it. Works every time. Just pull up on the whel while you hit the centre shaft (protected by the nut screwed on loose) with a hammer.

cuzner,
Yes, this tool is probably the last to try, but it works. My first boat from 1979 needed a new steering wheel a few years ago. I tried all I could think of to get off the wheel. Finally I went to the hardware store and got the "tool". The wheel snapped of in a sec. Great tool. Just be careful not to scratch the steering wheeel.

/Bo

Re: Steering wheel removal

I recently used a balancer puller, designed to remove a harmonic balancer from a crankshaft. it worked great with no risk of scratching, as long has your wheel has a way to screw the 2 bolts into it on either side of the shaft

Sooooaak It Some More
Then Try That Swinging Press, Knee Trick Again
It Will Work
On a serious note if you have used the knee trick before you hit on the shaft/nut [should be flush] to many times in a row, undo the nut just to make sure its still free turning if not well......but if so repeat. Could be risky procedure. Remember shaft/nut flush and hit it square.

Re: Steering wheel removal

This hit it while supporting it with your knee trick ... Is that why I often see boat owners limping?

Re: Steering wheel removal

So ChrisII, what happened? Did it come off? Easy? Hard? We gotta know!

When you reassemble, just put a light coat of OMC Tripple Guard grease on the shaft, in the shaft keyway, inside steering wheel, and wheel keyway. It will make things soooo much easier to remove next time. And don't tighten the *(%$! out of it. Also, if the nut is not a locking nut, then place a cold chisel across the open face of the nut and strike with hammer. Intent is to compress the top thread of the nut on two places so it screws on hard. That way even if it works loose, it will not vibrate or walk off the end of the shaft while you are hanging on to the wheel with the throttle set at WOT!

Mark

Re: Steering wheel removal

As WBW said but: To avoid damaging nut, threads, or shaft, after backing nut until it's flush w/shaft, place a double ended hammer on top of nut/shaft. Hit that hammer with another hammer. You'll avoid damaging anything, but it takes 4 hands.
