Re: Steering

First you need to determine what's stuck.....the motor, helm, or cables. Disconnecting the cables from the motor and seeing if it's still stuck would be my first step.

Re: Steering

Hey thanx for the info. I disconnected the engine from the steering cables and the engine swings nicely...

So now I have to figure out if I can just grease the cables and get them going again or Do I have to replace the whole steering system. That is something i would prefer not to do of course.

Any suggestions? thanx again

People haven't had much luck greasing up the cables. I think at a minimum, you'll have to replace the cables.

Re: Steering

Tnis sounds kinda hokey but it works really well, remove the cable from the boat and suspend it from a rafter in your garage, take a heavy plastic bag and poke out one corner and put it over the cable end and tape it really good.

Fill the bag with a thin oil and let it sit overnight, if you can spin the cable it will pull the oil through really quick if it is one of them that has the wind on it.

Unless it is really buggered up this should get it.

Re: Steering

ANY oil or grease in your cable WILL make it harder to move. Cables are NOT ment to be lubed. They are made from low friction materials and made to use as is. If they get stiff, REPLACE them. That is better then wondering if it will freeze up when out on the water.
