Re: Stem cell research

What are human embryonic stem cells?
Stem cells are cells that have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body. Serving as a sort of repair system for the body, they can theoretically divide without limit to replenish other cells for as long as the person or animal is still alive. When a stem cell divides, each "daughter" cell has the potential to either remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, or a brain cell.

Why not use adult stem cells instead of using human embryonic stem cells in research?
Human embryonic stem cells are thought to have much greater developmental potential than adult stem cells. This means that embryonic stem cells may be pluripotent –that is, able to give rise to cells found in all tissues of the embryo except for germ cells rather than being merely multipotent--restricted to specific subpopulations of cell types, as adult stem cells are thought to be.

Have human embryonic stem cells been used successfully to treat any human diseases yet?
Scientists have only been able to do experiments with human embryonic stem cells (hESC) since 1998, when a group led by Dr. James Thompson at the University of Wisconsin developed a technique to isolate and grow the cells. Moreover, Federal funds to support hESC research have only been available since August 9, 2001, when President Bush announced his decision on Federal funding for hESC research. Because many academic researchers rely on Federal funds to support their laboratories, they are just beginning to learn how to grow and use the cells. Thus, although hESC are thought to offer potential cures and therapies for many devastating diseases, research using them is still in its early stages.

Adult stem cells such as blood-forming stem cells in bone marrow (called hematopoietic stem cells, or HSCs) are currently the only type of stem cell commonly used to treat human diseases. Doctors have been transferring HSCs in bone marrow transplants for over 40 years. More advanced techniques of collecting, or "harvesting", HSCs are now used in order to treat leukemia, lymphoma and several inherited blood disorders.

The clinical potential of adult stem cells has also been demonstrated in the treatment of other human diseases that include diabetes and advanced kidney cancer. However, these newer uses have involved studies with a very limited number of patients.

http://stemcells.nih.gov/faqs.asp

Basically, cells from a fetus have the potential to be whatever you want them to be - kind of like a basic human building block. The limitation is on these kinds of cells only (i.e., those from aborted fetuses)

Thanks SBN,Mod2 and Toad & others. I am very interested in this debate as well as science/medicin(sp?)... would you believe I work in the field but sometimes I cant spell it?

And Ralph, friend...please dont call me OJ....make it ojb or odj or odd or *&*(Zx@ ....but you doesn't have to call me "OJ" or sunkist or juice! if ya know what I mean. :)

Re: Stem cell research

Hi Guys,

I mentioned it once before, and I'm not lookin' for sympathy, but perhaps understanding.
I have a severe form of invasive (and at present incurable) cancer. Times ticking for me. I woke up at age 31, (now 33), healthy, but my world has forever changed. Now I'm anxious for science to do it's thing as expeditiously as possible. Certainly not at any cost, but in a common sense fashion. A year ago they gave me 3-6 months. They must be bad at math. :)

Re: Stem cell research

i'm just going on old thoughts here, cause its been at least 1/2yr since i read alittle on stem cell work.

but i was thinking they could basically farm with what stem cells they already have (if they had to work without getting more fetuses). you know, as in clone/split/multiply what stock is already out there. i thought there was at least one american lab already doing this kind of thing... (will have to read up later)

Re: Stem cell research

We will have to rely on European and Israeli laboratories for the next great steps forward in this field, because over here the abortion issue has severely politicized the ethics of harvesting of stem cells, whereas in Europe and Israel the two subjects are seen as completely independent of political pressure.

Re: Stem cell research

Toad, I am very sorry to hear that. I hope you beat it. There are new treatments it seems almost everyday. The great thing about the net is you can keep on top of what is going on in the field and take advantage of new developments as they happen. I certainly understand and respect your passion for the subject.

Re: Stem cell research

Toad,

If I were in your condition I would probably feel exactly the way you do. As a person I enjoy reading your posts and debating your frequently opposed point of view, and Nothing would make me happier than a miracle cure to restore your health. I am sure that you know nobody wants to withold even the opportunity for your recovery.

As the discussion was about the government's position, it was more of a theoretical discussion of new technologies and their ramificaions on society.

I am sure you don't want or need sympathy, but we all wish you the best. :)

Thanks Ralph, Pointer, OddJobb (I'll drink plenty of OJ) ;-)
My motto is: "things can always be worse".
This goes for anyone, anytime.
Never take your health for granted. Everybody assumes they'll live to 79.678 years old, but you just might not...

:)

Toad sorry to hear about your medical condition for sure and I hope for the best for you.

This is some good reading for sure.
Thanks for all the info on it.
Never thought about it much but seems like a good way to fight a nasty monster for sure.

Re: Stem cell research

i said a prayer for you toad, be you real or imagined ;) a term limit on life that is known is very enlightening also. i wish that it is long lived. :)

i think the main force of cloning is now going on with the stem cell research, at least if it is going on here in america. i still haven't followed up like i should. i will keep up the thougths for another day. peace

Re: Stem cell research

If it will help the human species down the road, so be it...

Wouldn't it be nice to clone your own heart, or other organs while you were young, and then have them stuffed in later in life when they start to fail? That would be so cool!

No more 2-tooth, 1 IQ, 12-fingered kids playing the banjo! YEE HAAAWW!!

Seriously... I think the research is a good thing. Go for it.

In my opinion of course....

H.

MY, I was thinking I heard the same thing not to long ago. Not for sure though.
