Hey everyone! It's getting to that time here in MN to get the boat out of storage I think. I'm not quite sure if it's time to de-winterize it and throw it on the water yet, but I can at least start tinkering with it. One of the things I didn't quite get around to doing last season was the stereo. It had 2 speakers connected to the old dual shaft setup with a casette player. LOL! My boat is a 1990 Cobia 22' cabin cruiser. Right now it's got a new headunit (Pyle eBay special) that just does radio, and flash media. I figured I don't ever use the CD player in my car, I won't use it in my boat. I put 2 more speakers in running off the head unit I've got 20 watts RMS to each speaker I think. As we all know it's kind of hard to hear music while underway, but that would be my ultimate goal. I've got a spare amp kicking around that I used to use in my car. They don't even make amps that go this loud anymore it seems, but it'll do 120 watts RMS to 4 speakers, so I think I'll use that for the 4 speakers on the deck, and then run the 2 cabin speakers I plan on installing off the headunit.
My big question is subwoofers though. Where is the best place to put these things to get the maximum volume out of them? I was thinking in the cabin, but then if people want to relax in there it's just going to be full of bass. I've got a huge box under the passenger seat (to get it above the windshield line of the cabin), and I was thinking about there, but subwoofers don't work like traditional speakers in the sense that the sound is aimable. For example in my car when I have the trunk open, the subs don't seem loud straight on, but with the trunk closed, the subs have something to bounce the waves off of and shoot the sound into the front. So I thought about putting 1 12 on each side of the engine under each seat and point it towards the back in hopes that it would do the same thing as it does in my car. I think I'll make ported boxes because typically I listen to a lot of bass heavy rap/hip-hop.
Sorry this is a lot of rambling, and a lot of thinking out loud. What do yo all think? My old boat I had an 8" Bazooka tube pointing right into the hull of a closed bow runabout. That was LOUD, and only 80 watts! I want to be able to hear the bass while underway. I've got a 1500 watt RMS amp lined up, although the subs I have won't take that much right now anyway. Where do you guys have your subs positioned for loudest volume?

Re: Stereo Upgrade

I had an old computer speaker setup with a ported box. I re-used the ported box and put in a Kicker 8" sub connected to a kicker amp (can't remember the watts, but it was a class D, maybe 300watts). I put the box in front of the passenger seat foot area. Passengers can put their feet on top of the box. Works out good b/c I don't have lots of room.

8" plenty loud!

Re: Stereo Upgrade

Cool thanks for the help! I guess bass is a little different from the highs and mids because that'll carry a little more. So I might not need as much as I think I'll need then. I've already got 2 10s that I'm not using, maybe I'll just use those instead of buying some 12s. The only thing there is that they're rated at 150watts a piece RMS I think. Paired to a 1500 watt amp there's a good chance I'll over power them.
Do you have pictures of video of your setup. I'd be interested to hear how it sounds!
