Stern Bracket

I have spent the day on the boat fixing things and finding things, I was poking around the stern bracket wondering why my self draining outboard well doesnt self drain, Ive noticed the stern clamps werent done up it was more or less relying on the lower bracket bolts through the transom to keep it in place, the clamps were fairly rusty and stuck but I freed them up and tightened them there was about a 8mm gap between the brackets and transom, would there be any problems associated with having loose clamps, ie my power tilt/ trim as stated elsewhere I said that when underway cant trim or tilt the motor but if you throttle back to near stop it will happily tilt.
Ive started repairing the hull splits and chasing a million other jobs that need looking at, all part of the fun of boats.:lol:

No the trim should work under all conditions. The tilt should be harder to work under a load.
If the top clamps weren't touching the boat it's a wonder you didn't damage the brackets while trying to trim underway??

Yes! If you have a early Force with the older Chrysler type power trim. loose transom clamps will cause problems. The trim cylinder assembly sits directly against the transom and the transom keeps it from rotating. If the transom is soft or if the transom clamps are loose. the trim assembly can rotate around the mounting bar and the ram can slip off the stainless "perch" it usually bears on. To prevent this and for other reasons I almost always put a piece of .080 hard aluminum between the transom clamps and transom.

The second photo shows the perch without the stainless strap in place.

Wow frank thats one sexy Chrysler, love the cover!, I think I might run it up on the hose fitting and check the tilt that way.

is that your engine frank? in the second picture you are missing the trim shoe. the aluminum will eventually give out. I've seen cases where the aluminum wallowed and the backside of trim housing started pushing against transom with more force causing the transom to have an indent. It eventually got to the point where guy could not trim because the tip of piston would just slip off bracket. he also had so much damage to transom that it took a SS plate to fix

No, Rritt! that is just an extra yoke I have lying around the yard. I was just showing the perch the shoe fits over. In fact, I think I took off the trim shoe to use on another engine. And yes, i too have seen boats where the trsansom clamps have dented the fibergalss making the trim piston ride off the shoe, resulting in no trim condition.

Note that Number one is not finished. It still needs gold letters applied and trim still needs to be finished in automotive orange (I think it is a Nissan color) and applied.

Letters and medallions are procured at the local U-Pull-It junkyard. They are Chrysler original.

edit: First photo is my real mermaid. She does not think she is sexy and can't understand why she is constantly hit on by men.

you can duplicate letters and stuff using casting resins and making two part molds. spray the mold with paint prior to casting and the part will turn out with appropriate color. there are videos on you tube showing the process. it is basically the same thing that they do on myth-busters. it is very easy. a complete kit is under $100.
