Stern drive alignment bar??

I am removing the stern drive on my VP 4.3GL which is a Cobra SX drive. Do I need to buy the alignment bar and drive handle to re-assemble? They are quite expensive and my local mechanic says I do not need to. What do you think? What does this piece of kit look like, I have access to a machine shop, can I make one?

You do need an alignment bar, but you don't need the Volvo bar. The ones for Mercruiser are the same thing and are found on ebay, as well as aftermarket ones from places like mercstuff.com. They work just as well at less price

And, if you know of someone that has a metal lathe, here is the dimensions.

Cheers Don you have saved me a lot of money. I have bellows ready for changing and lubricants etc as per manual, how easy a job is removing the sterndrive and changing both bellows?
I am also doing full lubrication.

I'm very new to mechanics and found it no problem with the correct VP manual. I brought of ebay the pressure / vacuum tester so I can be sure all the seals are well. As a point of note when reassembling my SX drive there are two different liquids to use to seal the bellows and studs, my manual also say to replace the seal around the water intake which I do whether it is necessary or not I cannot say.

Thanks chris, i already have the water tube seal and white sealing compound for the stud threads and bellows, moly lube for the shaft splines, adhesive for the tube seal and wheel bearing grease. This should do the job I hope!!

After reading a lot of posts I still am confused as to what I have. (OMC, OMC Cobra, OMC SX, OMC SX Cobra) Does the 1995 have the shift cable issue ?

No, it doesn't. The 95 Cobra is the same as a Volvo SX.

Thanks for the definitive answer. I ordered the OEM manual set so this weekend I intend on installing the transom service ket. (Gimble Bearing, Bellows, Etc) I already ordered the transom service kit but not "U-Joints". If I open it up and find U-joint are needed can I get them locally or would they be special order ?

You may find them at Napa,they sell Sierra marine parts.
