Stern Drive Installation

1979 Mercruiser 265, I recently replaced the u-joint bellows on my boat, thanks to a lot of great help on this forum. I was able to find a lot of information on how to remove the stern drive, but I'm having trouble getting steps on how to properly re-attach it. Are there any critical steps that need to be taken before re-attaching?

Just don't want to take anything for granted.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Stern Drive Installation

did you run an alignment bar on to it to line up the gimble brg. with the coupler?

some steps to do prior to reattaching drive...

grease drive shaft spines
grease gimble brg.
spin gimble brg to insure total smoothness.
grease ujoints
grease shift shaft slide and lever
glue big round seal into bellhousing to insure it stays there and makes the seal

might be more things to check. if so, i'd guess someone else will correct me...

do you have a service manual? in it,you'll find the exact steps needed to do the deed.... if not go to the adults only sticky at the top of the i/o fourm. go to #9 and get #3 for engine, #4 for drive.. confirm proper s/m by serial number...

No, don't have the alignment tool, do i need to purchase one? I do have an owners manual, but it's pretty confusing to read. You said to glue the large seal into place, what kind of adhesive do i need for that?

yep. might as well get one now if yer gonna work on your drive. i procrastinated too, didn't wanna spend the bread or whatever. but ya gotta align it. plain and simple. so bite the bullet and get one now. i wished i'd have got one sooner than later... everytime you remove the drive. yer supposed to check alignment. side benifit is a good way to get spline grease into the coupler...

what service manual is that? install intrusctions are only one page long, (s/m #4, pp. 2B3) with 9 items to do.... if your not using the oem service manual, go get one, you have the resorce to do so that and have the right manual

any 'ol glue will do i think. i believe last time i just used a light coating of bellows adheisive. ya just don't want that big seal to move out of place while your putting the drive back on since it makes a seal and keeps water out.

one very important thing i did forget to say... everything needs to be in fwd. the drive in fwd with the shift coupler faceing fwd. + the remote in fwd with the shift shaft faceing stright ahead.. also grease the drive shaft o rings on the drive shaft itself....

Yes, you need the alignment too. $40 to $60 on ebay. But it could save you pulling the engine to replace that $300 coupler if the alignment goes out.

1979 Mercruiser 265,

It doesn't really matter that much, but since there is no such thing as a 265 engine or drive, did you mean a 165 (inline 6) or a 260 (V8 Chevy 350)?
