It's coming up on time to have my drive serviced.
It has never been off the boat since I bought it in 2001.
Several web sites say they change the impeller once per year, but my dealer told me at least 5 years on the Alpha One models?

Although I could probably do the work myself, I'm a little nervous doing so. One wrong thing, and I'm explaining to the 'ol lady why we need a new drive! Besides... I don't think my back would handle it. Those drives aren't easy to toss around.

I figure I'd have the impeller changed, oil, lubed etc... How much could I expect to lighten my wallet if a shop does it?

Thanks,

H.

Re: Stern Drive service... How much does a shop typically charge?

hello
the draw back to the 5 year interaval is the 4 6mm bolts that hold the waterpump housing to the lower drive. in 5 years of salt I usually resort to a oxy/acetylene and prayer then a drill and tap. I bill 150 dollars a broken bolt.
but barring stuck fasteners do do the water pump and remove the drive and check the engine alignment (all of which has a service schedule in your owners manual) your looking at 2 to 2 1/2 hours labor. the pump kit is about 100 dollars for the genII. 2 qts gearlube a 6 dollar gasket kit and some grease. the new style ujoints are lubed for life and have no grease fittings.
good luck and keep posting
