Sterndrive change-out

I recently purchased a used sterndrive to swap with my current poorly sealed one. I have removed and installed a lower unit before but the one I purchased has been seperated. So the upper and lower sections need to be put back together (I bought this locally and the two are matching). I have not done this before and while it does not look difficult I do have a few questions,

1. Is there a gasket between the upper and lower surfaces (besides the oil seal).
2. Any seals I should replace with it apart.

Thanks for your help.
Bob Fifty

bob

thers a lot of different drives most dont have a seal between them BUT there is a least one old merc type that does so what you have is needed for and answere

the drive would need to pressure tested to see if any seals are leaking

tommays

Oops, It would probably help if I mentioned the type of drive. It is a 1980 pre alpha 1.5 ratio 898.

Bob Fifty

Re: Sterndrive change-out

As far as I know, the only seal is a quad lip o-ring for the gear lube passage and maybe a pair of o-rings on the prop drive shaft. No gasket between the upper and lower housing.

Also inspect the shift shaft bushing, I had to replace that on my outdrive. and make sure it has the new stainless steel shift shaft, the original ones corrode I here.
