On a "normal", well-used alpha one gen one, how much rotational force should it take to turn the driveshaft by hand with a) the prop taken off, turning the u-joint by hand with a rag wrapped around it -- and b), in gear, with the drive off the boat, obviously.

1. Spins like a top
2. Bout like a stuck on pickle jar lid, lol
3. Groaning a little
4. Can this be right?
5. This ain't right!

I just took mine off for some regular maintenance and just for kicks, tried to turn it...WOW there's a lot of force there, guess it's just the gear mesh? Seems like that's a lot of power loss to the prop!!!

Re: Sterndrive force?

When you turn that ujoint shaft, you are also turning the raw water pump impeller. If it's dry, it makes it harder to turn. It also turns a LOT harder if you turn the ujoint shaft counter clockwise and try to push the raw water pump backwards. If you turn the shaft the proper direction and with the water pump wet, it will turn easier.
