I have a 2001 Volvo SX-M drive SER #4202030663. With a 5.0 GL 4012045986 3869056. Growling when turning or trimming up with muffs on. I pulled drive off to find absolutely no evidence of water. U-joints felt good and so did Gimbal. after checking alignment with proper tool all I could think to do was replace U-joints (figuring it only growled while turning or trimming but not when straight and level). Put back together and it's a little quieter but still growling. Not sure what to do next. Has anyone gone through this? any help would be appreciated.

Was there any roughness at all in the gimbal bearing? it doesn't take much.

No Don very smooth. No freeplay fore or aft either. I'm feeling like im just throwing parts at it against my better judgement. The u joints felt good also but I changed em anyway. At this point I wouldn't mind doing the gimbal and threading in a Zirk fitting and doing a boot. Just don't want to waste money and time only to find out it was something else

Ok Don I have decided to replace the gimbal bearing, inner seal, boot, and trim sending unit. I would like to purchase these parts from I boats but cant seem to find the correct parts on the site. After following threads on these topics it seems to me you are the resident expert. can you help me find the correct part numbers? I have already orderd the boot from the Volvo site linked to here. Even if it costs me a little more I would like to support this site. The amout of info I have found here has been great.

Thanks again Don. 200.00 for the sender. I think I'll pass on that for now
