1982 485 with mercruiser drive, i fitted new trim cylinders all ok, bled out the air up and down at least 10 times before launching the boat, the first time i try to adjust the trim at sea the drive comes up easy but wont go down the pump is running and up to the top with oil, eventually i got it to go down by leaning on the drive with an oar and getting my mate to press the button, any suggestions? pump nackered? can it be serviced?

i'm a rookie at this, but there goes...the first thing you need to check is the switch/button that controls the trim. the second thing should be the soleniod located on the outdrive itself. the wiring could have been damaged or corroded. the ground could be dirty, loose or broked, or the pump motor could be getting hinky. my guess would be dirty ground. you may also want to check the harness plug to make sure it's not full of crud and corruption.

Re: Sterndrive stays up

There is NO solenoid mounted on the out drive. They are mounted on the pump assy. if the pump is running wiring should be ok. older models have a valve that prevents the drive from coming up in rev. May be bad or not linked or adjusted properly. The hoses should go from the block under the drive to the cyls. in that order front two go to the front (bow) end of rams and rear connections go to aft end of rams. If one is crossed you will be working against one another.

if as you say it ran up and down 10 times ok it may be the o-rings on the valve block on the bottom of the pump (if older model). You can install a newer unit to fix pump problems. Also you can use ATF or motor oil in the system but NOT brake fluid.

Hope this helped..

Re: Sterndrive stays up

I need to Pirate this forum if I may. I'm having similar issues on my 81 sea sprite. I topped off the fluid and took the motor apart to clean the brushes, contacts, etc. But when I push the buttons the only thing that happens is the solinoids just click. No up, No down. The motor doesn't even try to kick on. Any thoughts? Can these motors be repaired or am i better off buying a whole new unit? Also... (I'm new to ownership, can you tell?) The cylinders look to be in desent condition other than some pretty righteous corrosion on the end caps. Is this ok? Do they need to be Bled? How?
If anyone takes the time to sit down and answer all this Thank you Thank you Thank you.

I had almost the same problem. Turned out to be a simple connection point.
Check all the wires and their connection points.
Not sure if this helps but it worked for me.
