Sterndrive stuck up. Merc 470 i/o.

Hello,<br /><br />I have a Mercruiser 470 (1982) and the sterndrive is stuck in the up position. When I work the switch, I can hear the motor whir, but it won't budge. It appears that maybe my trim limit switch failed, because when I raised the motor to help get off of a shallow spot, it raised further than it ever has before. There is not even enough room for me to put the hook in like I do for travel. Any thoughts on this?<br /><br />Thanks<br /><br />Alan

I also have a 470 merc it is a 1979, my out drive sticks in the up position at times,,I spray WD-40 on the rams after every trip out. It works real good, Haven't had a problem since.Lubricate with wd-40 & Have someone stand on the outdrive then try to lower it. also check the oil level in outdrive pump. my pump used 30 wt motor oil I have notice that if it is just a little low it dose not operate as well, Hope this Helps. I had the same problem with my drive getting stuck in the up position,I found this to happen when the boat was sitting on the Trailer for long periods of time with drive in the up position, What I did to solve this problem I got a set of those plastic trailing clips that snap onto the rams, then I give the drive a little bit of down to take the load of the rams, havn't been stuck since.
