sterndrive swap

I have a 1983 Mercruiser Baretta with a 140 inline 4 cyl. I damaged the drive gears in the sterndrive. I believe it is a 140r because the top plate is flat. I removed the drive from the boat. Can I just swap it out with an older 1980 sterndrive? It comes with a lifting ring on its top plate so I don't think it is a "r" MODEL. It is currently attached to a gm 305 with a cracked block. If the drive shaft is the issue can I just swap them also?<br /><br />Thanks for any help.<br />A novice.

Re: sterndrive swap

THe gear ratios will be different. The 140 probably has a 1.98:1 ratio where as the 305 (V8) had a 1.5:1 ratio. I don't think you could do this swap.

Re: sterndrive swap

Thanks for the reply. I did look at both drives. My plastic tag is barely readable. I did make out 1.98R and part of the serial # starting with 640?? the shaft measured 9 7/16" approximate.<br /><br /> On the other drive I found a metal tag with 1.50R and serial number 532??60. I can get the whole boat for $250.00 including a brand new prop. Where a set of gears cost a whole lot more so I'm told. Why are the ratios so important and can I make do?

Re: sterndrive swap

You may have to be careful here, I am no expert, but i believe there is a difference in the length of the drive shafts, the older ones will not engange fully with an 83 or newer, that being said, the other problem is the gearing. You could compensate by changing prop pitch, but again, I don't know if it would be satisfactory for you... all in all, I think you will need to find a drive that is of the same vintage and gearing. some of the pros will see your post and be able to give you some accurate advise........good luck

Don't Do It........<br />The New Outdrive will be a good Core.....<br />You'll Need the Longer Input Shaft,+ New 1.98/1 Gears...........<br /><br />Your 140 will be a Useless Dog with the 1.50/1s.......<br />You Can't Buy a Prop Small Enough..........

Re: sterndrive swap

Thanks for all the information. I guess I'll bite the bullet and start looking for a gearset. Anyone know of a reasonable supplier? (gear set, bearings, gaskets and a gimble bearing as long as it is accessable. I live in the middle of nowhere in Minnesota. Not too many parts supply houses for boats found in my neck of the woods..<br /><br />Thanks in advance!

You can't beat the advertised special on this web site for complete drives. I went through this last summer, unfortunately I didn't know about this site until I already had mine back together.<br /><br />DougV>
