'86 23' marlin day cruiser, chevy 350, holley pro-jection fuel injection system, edelbrock high-rise intake manifold, omc outdrive.

I'm having a problem with my older style omc shifting. It goes into gear fine with no problems forward and reverse, the problem comes when I try to get it out and into neutral either way. It's really sticky and sometimes I just have to shove it, thus skipping neutral and risking eating my gears. Anyone have experience or idea on this? Thanks

You say its "really sticky" possibility you have a bad shift cable.

Have you already tried to remove the shift cable from the linkage and shift it manually?

If not - try that - your problem may just be a bad cable.

They get worn and chaffed internally sometimes causing them to stick when you least want them to.

Also check your idle RPM to make sure it's not higher than engine specs.

Hope this helps some.. just some ideas to check.

Pat B. customerservice@401Hosting.com

the throttle doesn't stick at all when the engine isn't running, does that make any difference in diagnostic?

The shift cable going to the lower unbit is bad.
Don't be like me and get stranded on the water with your motor stuck in gear. Replace it before it snaps. DIY

Check your boat and see if it has little microswitches around the shifter cable where it hooks the cable from the box to the lower unit. These switches work with the ESA module to make your engine "stutter" when going in and out of gear dropping the RPMS allowing the clutch dog to unmesh. Your engine should idle no higher than 600. Really the lower you can get is the better for shifting Go to this website has lots of info about Cobras
http://www.funkopolis.com:8080/~stuart/cobra/
