sticky shifter in cobra leg has gotten to the point it won't shift

the shifter in my boat has always been hard to shift since i bought my 1989 larson 3 years ago. over the past winter i replaced engine now it will not shift into the forward gear.disconnected cable and can only get it to go into reverse. any help would be appreciated......thanks

Well, you more than likely have a failure of some sort, that will not be worked out until you remove the stern drive... number 1 cause is a failed shifter cable, then there are other things, like sticky shift rod, bent bellcrank, broken shift actuator.. so, get that drive off, and see what you need.. probably will see a shift cable and install tools in your future...
