stiff hydraulic steering

just picked up an old Giesler cedar strip with a 25 johnson o/b (2001) which, incredibly, has hydraulic steering installed. However, the steering is so stiff it can hardly be moved. Now, its damn cold up here, and no doubt that a part of it, but the former owner told me he's had problems with stiff steering even in the warm days of July.

Have never used hydraulic steering before. Any suggestions as to what the problem might be would be very much appreciated by this Canuk up here in the land of the midnight sun.

What brand steering?

True, the cold has something to do with it especially if the wrong type fluid is used.

Good luck!

no idea what brand of steering it is. the boat is still in the barn where I bought it. But I'd say its going on about 10 years old. I do have a picture of it, which I could email to you if that'll help identify it.

Re: stiff hydraulic steering

Is the steering stiff when the wheel is turned in both directions and when the boat is not under power?
