1979 260 V8, owned for a couple years. Always been a bit stiff going into/out of neutral form both forward and reverse. once in either gear all smooth. I had assumed it would be shift cables which I just had replaced but still stiff. I'm assuming it will be something wither at the shifter or at the motor. What should I be looking for/adjusting/lubricating?

Re: Stiff shifting

how'd it shift with just pulling and pushing on the cable after shift cable replacement? nice and butter smooth, or still hard?
it should push and pull real easy from the end ya connect to the shift plate. like easy to move with two fingers pushing and pulling.

did ya use the oem shift cable? from reading iboats for years, i'm under the impression there is a difference between aftermarket and oem shift cables. the consensus is to use the oem usually.

Re: Stiff shifting

Sounds like either the shift interupter switch or the telegraph itself may need lube.

I didn't perform the replacement - but it is the same resistance as before they were changed so thinking it is not the cables. Also, just thought - I have the shift lever out repainting it and smooth there so thinking back at the motor.
