Hi i have stiff steering on my merc steering.
I took it off to see if it was the cable or motor and turns out to be the cable, i also removed from the helm to check if it was that and 100% the cable,
I don't get paid for 2 weeks but want to use the boat at the weekend, is there anything I can do to make it easier, I can't remove the inner as it has like a hook on the helm end and the piston on the other end.
The cable isn't kinked or damaged but the piston end is pretty rusty greasy.

any assistance what to do / use would be appreciated.

Re: Stiff steering help

Apart from replacing it, not much. You could try holding the cable up (from the engine end) and getting some penetrating oil to work its way down, but normally, once they stiffen up, they're history...

Re: Stiff steering help

If your lucky you, may be able to free it up by using a light oil and working it back and forth, some times the old grease stiffens up.
