I have an older (1971) Modified vee 17.5ft runabout(WestWind>Tampa Fla),and a 1978 115HP Johnson (115ETL730). (Was my dads when I was a Pup).
With a slightly dinged Johnson 14x17 Alum.(cupped) prop, RPM was abt 5400 with alot of up trim.
Switched to a Stiletto 21317 and it killed the hole shot, rpm now 5300 with full up trim. I HAVE TO RAISE THE ENGINE TRIM UNTIL IT STARTS TO VENT A LITTLE TO GET INTO THE POWERBAND???

The engine is in its lowest setting, with the AV plate aprox. 1" below the bottom of the transom vee.
How high should I go??? I don't want to loose rough water handling, but its just a pig now!

This engine was not used for over 20 years & had carbs rebuilt. Also has new plugs, timing set, thermstats, and water pump changed.

Its seemed like this engine had alot more pull with the old OMC 19" prop that we had back when it was new.
ANY HELP HERE???

THANKS

Those Stilettos bite hard, huh? Real decent prop. You can try going up one hole at a time but I'd bet that youll end up in the third hole. If it were me, I'd go all the way up and test. Then drop back one.

At 5300 we're looking for at least 500 rpm.

Thanks Dhadley>>>I got the prop because you recomended it to me last season.
I have never changed the hight>>>Is it just a matter of loosening the lower bolts & removing the uppers??
Do I need an engine hoist? OR can I just block the skeg & use the trailer jack?
Do I need to ree-seal ALL the bolts, or just the uppers that were removed>>>and what is the sealent of choice?
How stable is the engine with just the lower bolts in? >>I will be working alone.

THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL>>>I have been getting an education reading your posts!!!!
Jim

Well, the best -- safest -- way is a hoist. Yes, you can remove the top bolts and loosen the bottom. The slide the motor up and reinstall the uppers. I've seen it done with just the tounge jack but it was kinda scarey. It worked but it made me nervous.

We remove the motor, clean off all the old sealer, reseal, and reinstall the motor. No need to unhook the cables or steering or harness.
