I have a searay 280 sundancer with a mercruiser 260 (chevy 350 to me) and it has an overheating problem. I've taken it to a mechanic, it was diagnoised with a impeller restriction.
Just for some background we took it out 4th of july and after running fine all day we anchored in shallow water. After 3 or 4 hours I cranked the motor just to charge the battery. At idle is when the temp gauge pegged. towed it in
and the mechanic found a shell, broken impeller and
said this was the problem.
Now after replacing the impeller, pump and putting a seal kit in the lower unit.
My mechanic is now saying that since no water is
getting to the thermostat something must be wrong
with where the water connects at the transom
This will require removing the outdrive to replace the plastic hose barb?? that connects the
water from the outdrive to the hose that runs inside the bilge (eventually to the thermostat.)
My question is
Since no water is coming from the outdrive
is this the next step??
Please help

My first thought is When your Wrench was " replacing the impeller, pump and putting a seal kit in the lower unit. "....
Did he account for Every Piece of the old Impeller ?????? I Really Doubt It.... That's what your restriction is.... If he had reverse-flushed the line to the T-stat,THEN..... You'd be boating Now.....
You probably have a piece of impeller logded in the oil cooler, or somewhere....
Yes, you Now need to pull the drive... But, It should of been done when the pump was rebuilt.....
The odds that your plastic hose barb is Bad, are Slim to None... It's replaced from Inside the boat Anyway....
You need a New Wrench....

Not a Mercruiser guy so take this with a grain of salt, but If your engine has power steering or an engine oil cooler I would first disconnect the hose entering the power steering oil and/or engine oil cooler and check there for anything blocking flow thru the cooler... Might just be a piece of the old impeller or some other crud caught up it there..

Dont pull the drive yet.Disconnect the power steering cooler, run water to the drive and start it up and see if there is water coming into the bilge. If there is not, take that hose off at the transom and repeat to see where the restriction is .You can poke around in the inlet with a wire to see if mud comes out,you can try to back flush with a hose.Take a close look at the coolers inside. If all is well back there check the risers by taking off the drain plugs and running the motor and see if water is flowing.and so on and so on.charlie
