I have my motor in a deep trash can so i can start it up, we unfortanately have no close lakes to take it to. My problem right now is the motor sounds like it has a slight knocking sound...quite a bit of exhaust comming out. The two holes that shoot the water back out were spitting water pretty good and consistant (not a stream) then it just stopped and started just shootin straight exhaust. Im leaving for the mountians in about a week and need help asssssssssap:D

Yup,i kept water to the tip top in the can...we even throttled it up a bit which required me to bail water into like a mad man...but at idling speed we're getting steam out the two pee holes

I just ordered an empellor to replace the old one, I was told that it could be worn down and not allowing the water to be circulated correctly. I also ordered a new thermostat and also a temp guage to see what we're running at. I was also curious...we have a 20 ft maxum 89 boat with that 125 on there...you think its under powered?

Well bud, if you have the same motor as me, then I might be helpin you here. From what i've been told, those pee holes (two holes bellow the motor case) arent supposed to shoot a steady stream of water, just sputter. If your sure its not over heating and you are getting some water out, then i think your good. The water actually exits below down by the prop along with the exhaust...I hope that helped...im a newbee too

Yes i was also told on this motor the water exits out above the prop out of that big hole witch i have seen i do get small sputters out of those holes, my holes are big enuff to fit the tip of my finger in is that like yours, what kind of boat do you have?

From my experience with the 89 Force 125, if you're only seeing steam, your engine is overheating. I have a warning buzzer that goes off whenever I lose water circulation through the holes. Must be routing some of the water through the thermostat and engine water jackets. I would replace the thermostat as well as impeller. Hope you haven't warped anything!

Re: still testing...89 125 force motor

well about your pee holes and exhaust and impeller etc. i was in the same boat as you until about a week ago! the deal with the ports(pee holes) in reference to your exhaust down by the propeller is that when you were running the motor before you put it into gear is that the exhaust port by the propeller was under water and the design was that when its under water everything comes out the pee holes. when the exhaust is out of the water it goes directly out of the exhaust and not the pee holes. my understanding of this was to reduce back pressure on the motor. and when it is coming out of the pee holes it should be a rather steady stream that comes out. i guess you could call the pee holes an exhaust bypass. as when your idling in the water with the motor down half the motor is under too. so the ports should give you the same effectiveness as the exhaust port by the prop. hope this helps.

onto changing the impeller, you need to pull the lower unit down away from the rest of the motor. i would strongly recommend buying a manual for your motor as you will need to refer to it to get everything where it needs to be on reassembly. before you change the impeller you will want to drain the gear oil from the lower unit. and to get it all done at once you should probably get some marine gear oil before you start. i believe the lower unit takes 1 quart but buying that manual will tell you everything you want to know about all the maintenance as well.

hope this helps you out

Re: still testing...89 125 force motor

According to the shop manual the lower unit on an 89 125 takes 26 oz of lower unit oil. you can read the step by step procedure on changing the impeller by checking out the sticky thread on top of this (chrysler/force)forum. The procedure is straight forward and the task is easy to complete. Try to have someone there to help you drop the lower unit. It is heavy. Good Luck.
