I have a 1985 volvo penta aq125a motor , I am working with a Seloc manual , I have removed {9} bolts from the bell housing ,3 from the frnt. cover 2 from the starter, and 4 that keep the motor to the bellhousing . Am I missing something ? Retainer ring on output shaft ? under seal ? Motor is out of boat . Any help at all would be greatly appreciated . Thanks

Re: Still trying to remove bellhousing

I'm looking at a diagram (clymer) of the 125a primary shaft and it doesnt show a snap ring into the flywheel damper, just a spline. It also shows 9 bellhousing bolts including starter.

The volvos use a vibration damper bolted to the flywheel (looks like a clutch plate) with a spline that the primary shaft (bell housing shaft) slides into - it could be seized in the spline ( rust) and/or siezed on the bellhousing locating dowls.

Use lots of penetrating fluid and time and gently lever the bellhousing EVENLY, you need to avoid bending the shaft.

Be careful not to drop the bellhousing on your foot - an extra pair of hands maybe?

Aldo

Is the starter mounted in the bell housing? Look in where the starter is mounted for the last bolt.

Re: Still trying to remove bellhousing

I know this is an old post but I just started a project boat, an 84 bayliner 21ft cabin cruiser, (wich i got trailer and all for $600). Anyways I just went through the same issue as the original poster. There is a snapring and a seal on the output side of the bellhousing. Its the snaporing that holds the gimble bearing in place. I had a heck of a time getting it out. But when I did the belhousing came off (with soem gentle persuation) leaving the shaft attatched to the flyweel/vibe dampner. Now heres my issue. Ive unbolted the dampner but the shaft and dampner wont come free from the crank. Any help would be very greatfull. I plan on a total rebuild of the engine. Ive gotten several helpfull hints for my project here and this is the only thread about the aq125 output shaft being stuck. Look forward to responses and my project. Plans are to have it in the water march 06. So I can take my time and do it right the first time.

Re: Still trying to remove bellhousing

In the future, start a new thread with YOUR problem, even if it is similar to someone elses.
No reason to hijack another post for your problem.

You shouldn't have to take them apart that way, the only reason you had to is because of rust and corrosion, that is also what is holding the flex plate to the flywheel. There is also a pilot bushing/bearing in the end of the crankshaft that the bellhousing shaft may be stuck in.
Normally, the shaft slides easily on and off the flex plate and pilot bearing.

Re: Still trying to remove bellhousing

I apologize for "hijacking" another post but didnt want to get flamed for not "searching". the flexplate seems to have released from the flywheel but the shaft doesnt release. The shaft does however have some side to side play. It is sitting with penetrating oil on it now.
