JB, dhadley, I hit the lake this eve., and after loading the livewell with whitebass & wipers, I took off and noticed it took a little more time to get on plane and the boat wanted to porpose like crazy. I had to keep it trimmed pretty level to keep things in order.
When I got to the ramp and loaded, I went around and looked and the entire right half of my stingray was GONE-bolts still there, and the left half had broken loose from the front bolt and was trailing by the rear bolt!!!
I found out it runs about 4-5mph slower with what was left, than it did before.
I have NEVER broke one of these until now, and I'm beside myself trying to figure out what would break it.....I was in 45ft wide-open water.

Re: Stingray torn off

I'd contact them and ask. That sounds like a manufacturing defect that took a while to show up. Like a void or stress crack that was molded right into it when it was made.

If you contact them they will probably send you a replacement for free especially if it has happened to others.

WH, I had a similar occurance with a two piece unit, but it wasn't the foil's fault. I did however find out what happens wen you get a steel cable ski harness wrapped around the lower unit. The cable sliced the ear of the foil righ off before the prop cut the cable.

nautijohn, I have a couple questions for you. Could you send me an e-mail? My address is in my profile. Thanks.

walleyehed

That type unit can break when the bolts get slightly loose and the wing flutters. That situation can also break the cavitation plate. I'll bet if you contact the manufacturer they will replace it.

If you want a unit that will not break look here:
http://www.johnfjensen.com/permatrim_hydrofoils.html

Re: Stingray torn off

All sounds like reasonable choices, but I found the boat does 6MPH less without the hydrofoil (stingray), and I can't trim far without porpoising....sucks coming out of hole too.
Is the perma-trim going to perma-rip my lower unit off???????

John F Jensen -- good looking units. They look very similar to the ones we made a few years back. Our were made out of fiberglass but I could never really find anyone interested in making them on a regular basis.

I will contact you thru your site. Glad to see them.

Re: Stingray torn off

Those fins place a lot of stress on the outdrive in order to keep the bow down. Just try to imagine the amount of pressure applied to the relatively small area of the anti-cavitation plate in order to push down a few thousand pounds of boat with 200 or more HP. I have seen many broken outdrives (including my own) from various types of fins and hydrofoils like you described. The ones which mount with only two bolts on either side, and close to the plate edge will ultimately break off a corner or more of the outdrive. I have seen two larger boats on my lake experience the same problem, one severely enough that the break allowed water into the drive by cracking the shell...very ugly. The bigger and more powerful the boat, combined with the design characteristics I described can lead to trouble. Consider trim tabs... Also...I ahte to admit it...but damaged one outdrive when turned full-left and trimming up, catching the corner of the fin on my newly installed ladder, I ahd not properly checked clearance after installation.

Re: Stingray torn off

There may be issues with them but they make a huge difference in my 6,600 lb Formula. Bennett trim tabs alone just weren't enough. I use Doel-Fins and have run with them at high speeds for a year now and have had no problems.

Re: Stingray torn off

Ralph;

It is not my job to defend Bennett, but if what you are saying is correct, I suggest that the trim plates (Bennett) are not quite large enough for your boat. Call Bennett or contact Tabman.

The extra lift that you get is from the extra surface area on the fin. If you added that to the trim tabs the results would be even better since you could now adjust all of the surface area.

Concentrating the lift pressure in the cneter of the boat is not a good idea. In your case since you have trim tabs, you can correct handling problems, but if you run only the hydrofoil (fin) you have no ability to correct the problems. If the motor manufacturers (who I assume have spent a great deal of time in design and testing) felt that a larger wing shapped cavitation plate would help the overall performance of the boat (not just getting on plane) I think they would have spent the extra few cents in casting material to do so.

No secret, I am not a fan of hydrofoils!
