Stinky Jeep exhaust?

I have a small exhaust leak on my '96 Jeep between the cat and the muffler, which I have no intention of fixing. :D Now that it's stopped raining, I always have all my windows down, and I've noticed my exhaust is really, really stinking. (sulfer smell) The cat has around 20k on it and it's a fancy dealer installed model the previous owner spent over $500 on. I just passed an emissions test a few days ago with no problems. (though they don't do a sniff test on '96+ here)

Other than a bad cat, is there anything else that might make the exhaust stink like that? Is there anything I can do to stop it other than replacing the cat?

Some Jeeps just stink :D They used to sell stuff like duck tape, only fire proof, to wrap holes in mufflers etc. Good luck.

Sulfer smell? Are you sure it isn't your battery overcharging? That will make a very nasty smell like rotten eggs. You may just want to check that, could be dangerous if the batter explodes. Not a nice thing to happen.

I recall reading somewhere that the sulphur/rotten egg smell comes from inefficient fuel consumption.

It's either the catlyc converter or if it's running a little rough an injector.

Quit running all that old gas you are collecting from your neighbors! :p :p :p :p Or thin it out a bit more.

Actually it can be as simple as the brand of gas you are using.

No, I've got a fancy sealed AGM battery and if anything it's undercharging since my alternator cable is so old and corroded. :)

Actually it's been getting really good mileage, about 18 around town, and that's even better than the EPA estimate!

Hell, I wish I had more old gas to burn! Right now it's got nothing but that fancy $3 gas they sell at Chevron. It must be better quality for 3 bucks right? :D

I think I'll try some of that exhaust tape...it will still stink though.

Get under there and wipe some marine tex over the leak and call it a day.

A sulphur smell from the exaust indicates a rich running condition or an inefficient catalytic converter.

Remember that any exaust leak under the vehicle is a very real danger of poisoning yourself.
The fact that you are smelling exaust is an indicator that it is more than the potential.
