Store 84 Yamaha 70 with lower unit off?

I just bought a 1984 yamaha 70hp outboard. The lower unit needs to be painted, and I didn't have time to do it before I take it out to the parking lot where I store it for the winter.

Should I take the lower unit off and work on it over the winter, or leave it until spring?

There is bare metal in the usual places, what should put on it to protect it if I leave it on the boat?

If I take it off, do I need to cover the opening on the motor?
