I notice that all the portoable grills for boats are alcohol burning and stainless steal. Im assuming the alcohol is a saftey thing because it wont sink into the boat like propane would. But why do they have to be stainless steel? To make them pretty and more expensive? I also understan the corrison thing but you could take it off the boat....

Re: Stove

Even my little boat has an awful lot of stuff on it. It takes several trips to the car to unload everything that needs to come off after a weekend.

'Cruisers' tend to leave as much aboard as they can. Hence the preference for stainless in real 'marine' equipment. You can keep a Magma or similar grill operating for 20 years.

If you want to take the grill with you, or don't mind replacing it every few years, Coleman and Weber both make some really nice portable grills.

Re: Stove

My Magma grill is propane powered. My stove is alcohol powered. Can't say I've ever seen an alcohol powered grill.

I have never seen a non-marine style grill that has all the mounting options of a marine grill. It's the mounting options that make the marine grill the obvious choice for boating, the SS construction is just a smart choice by the manufacturer. While I agree that a non-marine portable grill would work well for years if you choose not to leave it in a marine environment all the time, I think mounting a non-marine grill would be challenging. I would never have a grill fired up on my boat that was not securely mounted. That would be really dangerous.

My grill can be re-configured quickly to be a one burner stove and we prefer it to the alcohol stove in the cabin when we need a stove burner rather than a grill. I'd buy another Magma in a heartbeat. I see them on craigslist all the time.

I agree with Mischief. The Magma products are well worth the extra cash. However, if you want to spend a little less there is a mountable boat grill made by Springfield. Here is a link.
